OK! Lots of news both on the writing front and the “40 after 40” front, though it all has to do with writing!

1. My book will be available THIS Saturday 1/30/2010! It is listed on Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, and on ABC-CLIO. links at the bottom of the page I am very excited to see this and I have been helping out with marketing in my area and letting the publisher do the rest of the “World” and I must say they are doing a great job as if you google the title it is listed on many, many books sites!

2. I booked myself another event surrounding the book! On Monday, February 15, 2010. I will be putting on one of the story time programs from my book at “Well Read Books” in Plaistow, NH! This means that along with the speaking engagement I have next Thurs. and a tentative talk in Candia I have 2 1/2 out of 5 talks booked for my list (#29)

3. I sent out my children’s Christmas picture book manuscript yesterday. It is off to New York City, “…it’s up to you New York…. N.Y!” If they love it I will hear back if I hear nothing in 6 months I dust it off and send out to Publisher number 2. Such is life in the book World. Honestly I will wait as I know there are several companies like iUniverse or Xlibris which I could pay to have all my work published right now BUT I like the notion of sending off the big manila envelope to the big publisher and having them pay ME to publish..call me old-fashioned but it also helps lend a little more credibility to your work in this highly competitive arena when someone took a chance on you some publishers (wrongly) frown on those who “self-publish” or use print on demand. I was lucky to have libraries Unlimited (ABC-CLIO) grab my query letter and publish my book on my first time out. I was lucky, but it was a market I knew and was familiar with and the result will be in my hot little hands in 2 days!! So let’s hope my luck holds with my kid’s book!

AND by sending it out that means that #35 is now DONE on my list. Yippee.

So I am now in the position of choosing which writing task(s) I wish to pursue next. I think I will concentrate on a New England story/humor-type book with some small-town observance stories in. Lord knows I have a TON of those. I also found a new greeting card company to shop some work too and perhaps they will be a bit quicker about paying. I also have a few other kids books in the works and I am itching to work on my screenplay but I will patiently wait until April for the “Script Frenzy” contest to tackle that one.

So all is well and busy in my Writing World and it’s weeks like this that make all the other slow and plodding weeks worthwhile. Just when your spirit and confidence start to droop, you get returns on previous investments which give you the positive, tangible boost you need. Motto!…..Keep moving forward, stay positive and be patient. Positive thoughts, energy and action will return to you in kind. Likewise if you’re  mired in fear, anger, negativity and revenge..aside from a stroke and an ulcer guess what you will get back, negativity, fear, anger, etc…..

Which would you rather have!!!???!!

“If it’s to be it’s up to me!”

So in trying to get one of necklaces out to wear tonight I found it was tangled up with about 3 other ones, not to mention a couple of earrings and a bracelet. I am very patient person, unless I physically don’t feel well, but this situation, although irritating was not beyond my capabilities. I actually am very good at untangling things and getting knots out of chains that others would either snap or throw away. I just keep pecking at it until I fix it and if it becomes to much I put it down and try again later or another day. I managed to untangle all the jewelry and have it laying on the counter to avoid any future “involvement” while I decide on the best place to put them. As the Mr. and I are still newlyweds and our home is also brand new it is taking time to find the right place to store and put things so it “works” for everyone. So fo now they are ll out and playing nicely on the counter.

This got me to thinking about life and goals, etc. Sometimes what we truly want is all wrapped up in something else and the reason we can’t get to it, or achieve it is that we must first “untangle” it from all the other things it is mixed up in. In short we need to take it one step at a time and fix and undo one knot at a time to get rid of the obstacles that are in the way. Once we loosen up all the others, what we are looking for will suddenly be free, available and ready for use!

This is where the importance of making lists and plans come into play. You listed your goals, now how are you going to get there? You can’t go from point A to point B in one shot. How do I know this??? If you could, wouldn’t you already be there???

Take your goal/dream and list what stands between you and  it –  now put them in order of what needs to be untangled first, when it’s done check it off and move on to number 2. If you need to take a class to get to your goal your first step is not the “obvious” choice of signing up for school. That’s a HUGE step and it will scare you into retreating and putting the goal on the back burner while more and more of your life passes. No, the first step is to list the schools you’d like to go to, then research their curriculum and requirements, then research the cost, aid, etc. Then plan how you’ll pay, Then get your transcripts together…etc….there are many small steps (victories) you have to achieve before you jump off the deep end and buy your highlighters. One of the LAST steps is signing up for school. Take the baby steps and check them off and before you know it you just took a pain-free fearless journey right to the doorstep of your dream!

You’ve got to untangle ONE CHAIN AT A TIME to get to the one you want.

So get your goals and your notebook and make your list and start making it happen!! Having the life you want doesn’t have to be scary or unattainable. Dream it, Dissect it, Plan it, then DO IT!

🙂

“Idleness is the Holiday of fools” – That is what it said on a fortune cookie innards I found this morning while cleaning my old room. Now the kicker is a minute later I found a second one that said the exact same thing! You may wonder why I would keep a fortune that said that?! Well I am one of those people who keeps ALL my fortunes. I have several small trinket boxes full of them. Now when I got food poisoning from an egg roll close to ten years ago I stopped eating chinese food for about 5 years and that put a HUGE crimp in my collection. I do eat chinese food now , though very basic fare and NO egg rolls.  I also found one that said “your business will assume vast proportions.” Now that is one I could definitely get my head around! Still, I’m wondering why these particular fortunes were not in the boxes with their friends?? And I was far from idle crawling under my old desk dodging dust bunnies trying to unhook my old monitor os that I can bring down my desk and trade in my folding table I am working on now for my actual desk. no small feat I can assure you!

Speaking of not being idle. I found out on Friday that another one of my poems was published!!!! It’s called “Pond Hockey” and it was published in “The NH Troubadour” This is one I wrote last winter while watching Mike and my nephew RJ play a pick-up game of hockey. RJ’s 1st! Here’s the link if you wish to read it! http://www.nhtroubadour.com/your-troubadour/your-troubadour-januaryfebruary-10/

In other news my Story Time book is due out in less than 15 days and I can NOT wait to see it. I have promoting it and marketing it myself in addition to the publishers marketing blitz to reach as many people as I can. They have LONG arms but I have short ones! The short ones can reach community members and organizations in the State I have contact with that wouldn’t even be a blip on the radar of a publisher that large! Again no one will ever be as excited about your work as you will so be your own cheerleader!

As for “The List”:

#35 is close to completion as I have found a publisher to send the manuscript to, I have written a cover letter and I just need to tweak two lines in the story and then I will send it along and then I will wait, and wait, then wait a wee bit more for their answer. As it is a rhyming-text picture book, the lines to need flow, it’s not enough just to rhyme so those two lines have to go!

Several of the items have to do with general health, getting in shape, and fixing my back. They all kind of hinge on one another but I’m happy to report that 13 out of the last 14 days I have ridden my exercise bike and the duration has steadily increased. Now you do NOT have to exercise every day but since I really, really dislike it I find that if I’m willing to do it then I’m not taking a day off because the time will come soon enough when I find 100 reasons not to climb the stairs to my old room and my exercise bike! On a positive note I did survive a holiday party with all of Mike’s co-workers from the GYM where he is a trainer. Just think about that for a second – 5 Gyms worth of Aerobics, instructors, personal trainers, and pint-sized perky people in skirts that were less inches long than their heels were high!!! It took a lot for me to walk into that room but I had a pretty good time and watched the thinnest, perkiest people in the room dance and go home alone. The MR. said it was because they were too high maintenance and in love with themselves to have a date. He of course said I looked fantastic but I reminded him that he signed a paper 8 months ago that made him legally obligated to say that!!!! But it was nice to have a date and a dance partner and not sit on the wall hoping one of the drunk trainers might ask me to dance…I do NOT miss that pressure. The lesson here is that I did NOT wish to go for reasons mostly self-inflicted but I did and I lived to tell the tale!

There are going to be lots of things that are unpleasant and downright horrifying on this journey called LIFE but the more dragons you slay the better you will feel and the more confidence you will have and you will be that much closer to a goal-fulfilled happy life!!! Way too much to fit in a fortune cookie, but you understand what I mean!! 🙂

FTFDIA! – Right Em??!!

Happy 2010! To my few but faithful followers! We are now 3 days into the new year and by now you have either made a resolution, broken it, or are still undecided just which resolution to make. Many people think making New Year’s Resolutions are bunk. However, I think that even though the majority of people fail, fall off the wagon, or quit the gym, by February first each year, there’s a reason millions of people still continue to make them.

I believe that your birthday and New Years Day are such constants and people are always trying to better themselves that those days seem like a good time to start a new idea, venture, goal, diet, whatever. Instead of starting to change your life on any old Tuesday most people need the bigger fresh start of a brand new year to be their kick off. I also don’t think just because most people don’t follow through on their resolutions that makes it ok to stop trying every year. The underlying reason people make a resolution, wish on the first star, or on their birthday candles, is that they have a desire to change something in their life, mainly for the better and that is never a wrong decision. After all YOU live your life and of something isn’t right it’s your prerogative to change it. Most people don’t change due to fear and the fact that they think the dreaded “other people” will laugh or think less of them, so a silent birthday wish or quiet New Years resolution is the perfect solution. You can make the wish and start out trying to accomplish it and for most people, if you fail well, no one knew. No harm no foul right? Well, there could be as if you don’t tell anyone, yes you don’t have to deal with their negativity but if you tell the RIGHT person, their support can make all the difference in the World to your wish, goal, or dream as then you will have someone besides yourself to be accountable too and if they are truly in your corner they will help you not to fail!

So maybe THAT should be your wish for the New Year, not another diet, quit smoking, be more organized resolution but simply a resolution to surround yourself with positive, nurturing people who will help you achieve your goals and be your biggest cheerleader as well as a shoulder on days when it’s not going so well. Many goals fail to be achieved due to lack of planning, fear, lack of faith, and lack of support. Once you find your goal for the new year, make your next step be finding someone who believes in your ability to achieve it. Their support will be priceless, and it’s fun to be able to share your little successes along the way with someone who is genuinely excited for you and not tinged with jealous poison!

You owe it to yourself and your dreams to make a new plan and a new “friend!”

 Good luck !
