On Sunday I got to check #7 off my 40 after 40 list! I grabbed my Mom, a picnic lunch, told the Mr. to drive north and don’t stop until I say so! As we approached exit 34B off I-93 the sky and the air were so much brighter and clearer than the hazy, humidity-laden air I’d been breathing for two weeks. Franconia was every bit as beautiful as the postcards I’d seen and as I stood on a rock IN Profile lake looking through the sun’s rays to see where the “Old Man of the Mountain” had been I only wished I had been here sooner.

It was a gorgeous day, the lake had not a single ripple and was as cool as a lake should be. I dipped my toe in the water while my Mom rested under the “Old Man” sign and the Mr. picked me a small sweet pea blossom.  It was just a peaceful relaxing moment. Since it took me years to get to the White Mountains I decided we needed to check out a few other towns/sites. We were too late to see Clark’s Trading post bear show, but we visited the gift shop and made a souvenir penny, which we have both been collecting for years. We saw the Lafayette dinner train and had supper at the Woodstock Inn and Station. the White Mountains are just a really pretty area and I am so glad I went. The next trip will have to be an overnight as there is just too much to see when you have a 1 1/2 hour ride to and from. I don’t really enjoy long car trips and halfway in I started a rousing chorus of “99 bottles of beer on the wall.” I sang alone among the laughter from my two companions. I then provided more comic relief as I tried to recline my seat to elevate my leg and give my knotted-up back a rest. I hit my head and got my arm stuck in my purse when I tried to use it as a pillow among other minor disasters. Aside from leaving toe prints on the windshield nothing much else was accomplished and I righted my seat and tried to behave.

I am lucky that the Mr. likes surprises and he has been working a lot and this was a nice afternoon that took minimal planning on my part and all 3 of us had a great time and got to stand under the mountain for the first time. Apparently even though they’d seen the “Great Stone Face” before they had never gotten out and walked or stood near the lake. I was happy that my deciding to fulfil some life goals ended up giving Mimi and the Mr. a new experience as well!

I can’t encourage you enough to start making a list of fun”things to do” before you either run out of time or the opportunity no longer exists. I have lived in New Hampshire since I was seven and I didn’t get to see the “Old Man” until AFTER he fell. I always wanted to go to Las Vegas to see Siegfried and Roy and poor Roy got mauled and that was the end of that. I feel a sense of urgency to get to Italy before the leaning tower of Pisa is a pile of rubble!

Whatever you want to do or see no matter how trivial it seems to you, if you “always wanted to” then go do it. Write it down, list your steps, make a plan, and then make it happen. The Robert Frost farm is FIFETEEN minutes from my house and I had to put it on a list to actually stop and visit!

Get out there and do what you want while you are able! It will be worth it, I promise. 🙂

A beautiful picture from the day, below.

Yesterday was Bastille Day and as such we had a day-long food celebration as I reported in previous blogs that I believe or retriever, “Max” is French. He sits to the command “Croissant” and lays down to the command “Ganache.” I have no idea but it works. He did get to enjoy some of the food and he was sporting TWO new bandannas, one red and one blue.  It was a fun day and having theme dinners however small breaks up the food monotony and gives you something to look forward too. A few pictures are posted below.

Now, for the 40 after 40 list update!

Sunday, we will be completing another item but it is a surprise from the Mr. so I will not reveal it just yet but I am excited to cross it off the list and my mom is involved as well.

As for the BIG dessert challenge, I have not received an overhwelming response so I shall be picking between places I always wanted to try one and never did some of the contenders will be “The Outback” restaurant and the “Longhorn,” to name a couple

I started a new exercise program on Monday which will help with #’s 1, 2, 4, 25, and a couple of others. It’s been four days and so far so good! This program gives you a cheat day so THAT will be the day we consume the BIG dessert!

As for the Plymouth Prowler, I know there are a few around as I have seen them, no bites yet on here or Twitter so I took the next step and posted it on Craigslist –http://nh.craigslist.org/com/1844597478.html  so we shall see how that goes!

I will be working on #15 when schedules permit with my willing friend! and I had an idea last night for the “perfecting and old skill” research is involved but I’ll check it out.

As for learning a new skill…..Is playing poker a skill?? The Mr. has taught me with some creative (missing) instructions and so far I have manged to beat him more often than not. 🙂 So that could potentially be finished….jury is still out though.

I am going to post the list below for those of you that don’t feel like clicking on a separate page to see my progress!

Thanks for the offers of help and input thus far and full steam ahead!!!!!!!!!!

Max (the dogs’) Bastille day celebration is all set for this Wednesday and it’s time to focus on the 40 after 40 LIST!

I posted the other day that I need some help with a few items and I did not receive an overwhleming response so here goes again!

#14 on my list is to drive a purple Plymouth  prowler. If any of you faithful readers know of someone who owns or has access to one please let me know. I don’t need to take it on a road trip, a simple spin around a parking lot would do me just fine. I will most likely be posting the request on Craigslist as well to see if someone will help me – You don’t know if something’s possible until you ask!!

#26 is to go to a restaurant and just order the “BIG” dessert. How many times have you eaten and then been too full and said “Next time I’ll just get the big dessert?” Well I am going to do just that but I can not decide where to go and who has the best dessert, this is where I need your help.

I need suggestions of which restaurant AND exactly which dessert I should have. Please keep in mind I am lactose intolerant so ice cream and cheesecake (damn it) are not options. If a dessert comes with ice cream on the side that’s OK as I’m sure my willing companions will eat it for me!    So I will take all your suggestions and then put up a poll and let you vote on which one I have!

Please email me or leave a comment on this post and in a week or so I will put the poll up!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Also if you haven’t yet done so become a “fan” of my facebook page for writing samples, business services and author updates!- http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/Melissa-Rossetti-Folini-Bee-Leaf-Works/123347344351416?ref=sgm

You can also post your dessert suggestions on my personal or business Facebook page a well!

I will putting on a program from my book “Story Times Good Enough to eat!” tomorrow night at 6:00pm at the Nesmith Library in Windham! Can’t wait.

So for those of you regular followers of this blog, you are familiar with our dog Max. I blogged about him frequently last summer while I was on my quest to fold 1,000 cranes before my milestone birthday. Although older and crankier Max, is still Max. There are days we don’t think he’ll last until supper and then the next day he’s up on his arthritic legs stealing a bun off the island right in front of me!

Sometime last summer I discovered that Max may be French. I am actually serious. You see he won’t respond to the normal “sit, stop, lay down” commands some days and at lunch one day I looked at him and said “Croissant?” and he sat. My Mother and I stared at each other and groping for another French word I said “Ganache!” and he laid down! After some uproarious laughter I concluded that Max has  not really been a bad dog all these years, he just couldn’t understand English! I immediately texted my husband at work and said “Zee dog is French.” His response, ” Zat ees not my dog!”

Time after time Max has been shown to respond to various words from the French language, now mind you I do not speak French so the commands are limited to “baguette, Escargot, and “Zee toast of Zee French.” This is in no way conclusive evidence that Max speaks French but he does  not respond to Italian or Spanish so that is my story and I’m sticking to it!

So! In honor of the Dog’s French heritage and my penchant for throwing theme dinners, we will be celebrating Bastille Day next Wednesday with an all French menu, I even found a teeny, tiny, personal-sized Brie cheese, it’s almost too cute to eat! We are also on the hunt for a French-Themed bandanny for the dog as he has one for every occasion, but this is something we haven’t celebrated before and I fear he would shred a beret!

So, if your pet is unresponsive to you perhaps they are not just a bad pet but misunderstood due to a language barrier! I wondered if perhaps the cat was also French but it doesn’t appear so, in fact not only do I think she is German, I think she was Hitler’s cat! But THAT is a story for another day.

I will post pictures of Max’s dinner after the event and we’ll see if he is better behaved after being the recipient of his very own theme dinner.

In other news I am working full tilt on my 40 after 40 list and I have a little over 3 months until my deadline. I have completed in full – 11 items. Some of the others have had many steps taken but not fully completed and others are looming over my head with a giant alarm clock attached to them. As such I am asking for help with two of them for now.

1. #14 is to drive a purple prowler. If any of you faithful readers know of someone who owns or has access to one please let me know. I don’t need to take it on a road trip, a simple spin around a parking lot would do me just fine. I thank you in advance for your help on these two items and feel free to suggest more than one place, Lord knows I have many favorites of everything!
